Park Achievements in 2012

As 2012 comes to an close, the Friends of Lake James State Park wanted to take a moment and look back at all the achievements at the state park this year. What’s new in 2012 at the state park? Well there are miles of new trails, new picnic sites, a new fishing pier and rangers that received promotions and were commis- sioned. It’s been a busy year! There are 4 new picnic sites at the Linville Gorge Overlook, built by volunteers. As for the main picnic area, 9 new picnic sites were added, including 3 of those being ADA accessible.

Miles were added to the already extensive trail system including the Mill’s Creek Trail was opened and con- struction began on nearly 14 miles of mountain bike trails. An additional mile was completed on the Overmountain Victory Trail.

Other exciting additions include an ADA accessible fish- ing pier was added to the Paddy’s Creek section of the park. As for the rangers, Ranger Jamie Cameron finished BLET and was commissioned and Supt. Sean McElhone promoted to West District Supt.

All in all, it has been a very exciting year at Lake James State Park and The Friends of Lake James State Park is excited to see what 2013 will hold. These achievements would not be possible without the Friends of Lake James State Park members and volunteers. Please see page 4 for more information on how to get involved. Your memberships are key in helping these project become reality. Thank you for your support this year.
