Lace up your running shoes, put some grease on your bicycle chain and make sure your swim suit still fits; it’s time for the fourth annual McDowell Trails Association Triathlon, May 18. As it has throughout its history, much of the race will take place within the beautiful surroundings of Lake James State Park. Athletes will have an exciting new option this year in that they can compete in the traditional race, consisting of a 750-meter lake swim, 22-mile bike leg and 5-kilometer road race, or they can participate in the first duathlon ever held by the MTA. In the duathlon, competitors will start with a 4.1-mile run, transition to a 22-mile bike ride and finish up with a 5-kilometer run.

Even if you don’t plan to participate in the race, the athletes would surely appreciate some support from an enthusiastic crowd along the race route. Spectators are welcome to observe the race anywhere within the park boundary, providing they do not park along the roadway or any undesignated parking area. The race is set to begin at 8 a.m.
